3D RAILROAD (3DRR) MASTER DEMO README Note: The ReadMe.doc version of this document contains better formatting. You should open it if possible and use this text version only if you run into problems opening the *.doc version. INSTALLATION Demo System Requirements: Windows 95 Pentium 166 MHz CPU (or faster) or 100% compatible 32 MB of free hard disk space 32 MB of memory (more is better) 256-color capable display or better CD-ROM (unless the demo was downloaded online as a zip file) Mouse This demo also requires DirectX 5 or later. For your convenience, DirectX 5 is supplied. If needed, you can install DirectX by using the Windows Explorer and double-clicking the 'dx5eng.exe' file that is placed inside the demo's root directory after installation, then follow the on-screen instructions. If you try to start the demo and DirectX isn't available, you'll see a message indicating this, then the program will exit. To install 3DRR Master from a demo CD-ROM, startup the Setup.exe file from the Start/Run menu or by double-clicking it from the Windows Explorer, then follow the on-screen instructions. To install the zipped version of the demo, unzip the RRMDemo.zip file to the desired location on your hard disk, then run the Setup.exe file and follow the on-screen instructions. See "Trying Out the 3D Railroad Master Demo" below for a brief description of how to run the demo. PERFORMANCE TIPS This demo (and the program) runs well on 32 MB systems that have a reasonable amount of free drive space available for virtual memory use when/if needed. However, if frequent hard drive accesses occur, they may result in performance degradation during gameplay. If you notice momentary hesitations, check to see if your hard drive access light is coming on at these times (it most likely is). In this case (and in general), here are some tips you might find useful for improving performance: 1. Quit any other applications that may also be running at the same time as 3D Railroad Master. 2. If you have been running your system for an extended period of time, or otherwise using it extensively, shut down your system and restart to clean up memory and other system resources. 3. If you have a 32 MB system, consider upgrading your system with more memory. Memory chip prices are economical these days and can improve performance substantially, particularly related to 3D graphic intensive applications such as 3D Railroad Master. Consider increasing your system to 64 MB if possible. 4. Make sure sufficient free drive space is available for the Windows 95 virtual memory swap file. This file is allocated by Windows 95 when you start your system. It's size is determined by the system based on how much free hard drive space is available (usually on your C drive unless you have changed it). If this file is too small because you are low on hard drive space, it can also have a significant negative impact on performance. TRYING OUT THE 3D RAILROAD MASTER DEMO Please keep in mind that many additional layouts, 3D scenes/objects, backdrops, etc., are provided in the full release version of the program. Also, all of the program's functionality is enabled in the full release version. Some features are disabled in this demonstration version of the program. For example, you can't change the trains, cargo, or delivery schedules (the save option has been disabled). So that it is small enough to download from the web, the 3D Railroad Master demo comes with a single sample game layout, called Demo. To run the demo, select 3D Railroad Master Demo from the Windows Start menu or double-click the RRM.EXE application from within a Windows Explorer window. Once the demo starts, at the main menu, click Help and review the cab controls, short-cut keys, and other help information. Afterwards, click the Start Game button on the main menu, then click Demo to load the demo game layout. When the layout's overview map appears, move the mouse pointer over stations (small squares containing an "S") to review their names and locations, then click the Play button at the bottom of the tools (a right-facing indicator button that looks something like this ">" ). Below is a listing of the delivery schedule for the demo layout (you may want to print out this ReadMe document for easy reference while playing the game). Also below is a 2D plan overview of the demo layout (it was created with 3D Railroad Concept And Design). The object of the game is to try to successfully pick up and deliver all cargo as described below in the schedule while making as few mistakes as possible, and in the quickest time possible, to obtain the best score. The game ends once all cargo has been delivered. Note that all 3 difficulty levels are the same for this demo, but in the release version, you may choose among game missions of varying difficulty and complexity. * 3D Railroad Master Demo Schedule: 1. Start in front of the Claxtonville Freight Station. 2. Pick up flour on the adjacent track at Grainworks, Inc.. 3. Pull forward adjacent to the siding (point C), uncouple the engine, and couple to the box car and cattle car. 4. Pull forward and pick up cattle at Double X Cattle Ranch, then couple back to the train cars and caboose. 5. Traverse the figure 8 loops, then back into Upper Crust Bakery and deliver the flour. 6. Throw the switch to enter the figure 8 and deliver the cattle to Marvello's Meat Company. 7. Back up to Claxtonville Lumber and pick up lumber. 8. Pull forward, then back up along the lower siding to deliver the lumber to Pahrump's Furniture; and pick up furniture while there. 9. Pick up cement at Carlostoppi's Cement Company. 10. Go forward to the Grocer's Warehouse siding, then back up and deliver the meat. 11. Finish by crossing the figure 8, then take the outer loop and deliver both the furniture and cement to the Claxtonville Freight Station. * Demo Layout (3D Railroad 2D plan view) Note: illustration only available in the ReadMe.doc version of this document. Again, thank you for trying out the 3D Railroad Master demo. We hope you enjoy it and will be interested in purchasing the full release version of the program. As mentioned, the full version provides dozens of ready- to-play layouts, many additional train cars and scenery objects, allows editing/creating delivery schedules, adding custom cargo, and more.
